L is for... Loom

Updated: Apr 17, 2024

Platform: GoG

Genre: Adventure

Completed: 23/01/2024

This would not be the first time I ever completed Loom. I had played this game back in my teens with a friend of mine, probably soon after it first came out.

The game had stuck with me, not just because of its presentation and story, but how it set itself apart from most point-and-click adventure games.

For one, Loom does not have an inventory system. So there are no item gathering and combination attempts. Instead, after gathering a magic staff, you locate spells by examining things in the world around you. A spilled flask teaches you the "Empty" spell; a tornado teaches the "Twist" spell and so on. Each spell consists of four musical notes which you play in the right order to cast the effect. Play it in the reverse and the reverse happens. Empty becomes Full. Twist becomes Straighten. For its time, I was awed by this.

In fact, I originally re-installed this game to play with my 8-year-old daughter. I didn't go through with that mainly because I thought she might get a little scared in the later part of the game. Then again, she is the type of kid who watched me playing Far Cry 3 and said "Ooh! A shark. KiLl iT!" (Wasn't sure whether I should have been impressed or creeped out at the time)

Replaying Loom didn't take me long to beat again. While it had been some time since the last time I played it, I could still recall how to solve the puzzles. (Will make things a little smoother when I do decide to replay it with my daughter). It didn't mean I didn't enjoy it any less. But there was one thing I did not pick up on when I was younger, and it was the implication of the ending.

I always thought that it was a happy ending. But the way the game ended, evil was not defeated. It was merely stalled. So, it heavily implied that a sequel was required. I checked online, but couldn't find anything official about one - whether it was made, planned, or scrapped. Which is a shame.

But what I did find, although it is incomplete, was a fan-made sequel (https://www.forgegame.com/). Only the first chapter is available, which is a shame, but at some point, I still want to see what they had in mind.

Next up will be - Metal Gear
