G is for... Gemini Rue

Updated: Apr 17, 2024

Platform: Steam

Genre: Adventure

Completed: 28/12/2023

I know what I said about Adventure games in my previous post, but hear me out. In all fairness, Gemini Rue was not my original pick for this letter. Initially, I had set out to play Gunlok, a real-time tactical strategy game.

I had the game installed, and I even played 10 minutes of it to make sure it was running. Then the next time I loaded the game, nothing but a black screen. I tried looking for a solution online but did not have much luck at the time. So Gemini Rue became a last-minute change.

While I was gutted I could not play Gunlok, I did enjoy Gemini Rue. This was a typical Point & Click adventure game, though, thankfully, the puzzles weren't the mind-boggling think-outside-the-box kind of ones. The game centered around two characters - an ex-thug turned detective looking for his brother and an inmate at a strange training facility. While most of the time you played as one character until certain objectives were met then you'd automatically switch over to the other, there was the option to switch between the two whenever you wanted. Personally, I never found the need to, because both characters didn't have direct influence with each other (not like Day of the Tentacle for example).

The story seemed pretty straightforward and nothing out of the ordinary. But I will admit that I was caught by surprise at one point. Cannot reveal it here without spoiling things.

There was one thing however that I didn't like, or rather wanted more of. The game is set in its own universe and obviously, it wants to build up the lore as quickly and as best as it can. Now it doesn't flood the player with a lot of information. In fact, it's the opposite. It gives a little bit, to start a foundation, yet it still leaves a lot more to explore. I kind of hope that more titles can come out to further expand and elaborate on the lore. Doesn't even have to be the same genre.

With the completion of this game, this will be the last game I play in 2023. I promise the next one will not be an Adventure game.
