Another month has gone by, and boy did it feel like it blazed by quickly.
I had a lot going on this month, particularly with work, so I didn't get many opportunities to put some time into gaming. But I did sneak an hour wherever I could.
It probably doesn't help that I am caught up in Yakuza 0 on the PC and Ghost of Tsushima on the PlayStation. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying both games. Yakuza 0 is a lot of fun, but there are so many fun distractions! 10 hours into the game and I was still breaking out of chapter 2! The same is true with Ghost of Tsushima; while it may not offer the same amount of distractions as Yakuza 0, there is a beautiful world to explore with plenty of side stories and collectibles to seek out. So I am pacing myself through both of them. I should get there before the end of 2024.
I did however complete a few smaller titles, so here is what I completed in May:
Name: Disaster Report 4 Date Completed: 01/05/2024
I originally played the first two games back on the PlayStation 2, although they went by a different name in Europe - SOS: The Final Escape and Raw Danger! - so initially I didn't realize they were part of the same series. I only discovered this game by chance, and I was surprised there were two more games (although Disaster Report 3 was not outside of Japan and only on PSP). I looked forward to playing it because I remember how much fun the first two were. But... after finishing the game, I was sorely disappointed. There was so much unnecessary "fluff" in the game that without it, you'd finish it under a couple of hours. Even the survival aspects were very basic and for it to really affect you, you'd have to be extremely careless. The worst though was that your actions don't have an impact at all with the other NPCs. Sure you might lock out a side story, but pretty much their fates are determined. This becomes even more glaring if you play the Epilogue DLC. You'd hope, that since it required loading a previous base game save file, it would take into account and have the NPCs react accordingly. But no; instead everyone has minor amnesia and you get to pick and choose how you want them to remember you. Had a lot of missed potential I would say.
Name: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes
Date Completed: 15/05/2024
I originally got this game when it first came out on the PS3 (didn't have a PS4 at the time) and I still enjoy coming back to it now and again. Yes, I know it is very short compared to other titles, but I love how you can tackle the mission (and side missions) in a variety of ways. And the sharpness of the graphics is still impressive. It's hard to believe it came out in 2014! Especially considering I am playing Ghost of Tsushima and it feels like they are almost on equal ground. (And yes, I did reinstall MGSV: Phantom Pain after this. I am happily doing a mission now and then whenever I feel the urge.)
Name: Carto
Date Completed: 29/05/2024
I had my eye on this one when I first saw it on Steam, so upon discovering that it was part of the PSN Catalogue, I was more than willing to give it a try. And I was not disappointed. It was a sweet little puzzle game, that required you to pay attention to clues provided to you by NPCs or the environment to know how to structure the map accordingly. Doing so would then unlock new map pieces and solve puzzles. I did encounter a couple of head-scratchers, but after some tweaking and re-reading, I eventually got there. And there is supposedly a hint at a sequel. That piqued my curiosity even more.
Well, that's it for this month. Hopefully next month I will have a couple more to add here. If not, I can always mention a couple of games from between January to March. I am hoping to have finished Ghost of Tsushima anyway. We'll see what else might tag along with it.
