Console Catch-Up - June Monthly Recap

Updated: Nov 27

One more month; one more recap. This time, I didn't complete that many console titles as I focused primarily on Ghost of Tsushima. At least, I can say that I finished that one. I also completed my first A to Z run, and I was quite proud of that. I didn't start with a new cycle straight away, I figured I could enjoy a few days before I committed to it. In the meantime, I have enjoyed revisiting Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun (GDI Campaign) and Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor. Both were games that I wanted to include in the challenge but I had my reasons for excluding them, which were covered in the summary post. I may include my thoughts on both of these games (when they are finished) in one of the recap posts. But then they wouldn't be console recaps, would they? Something to ponder closer to the time.

As I did not complete that many console titles this month, I figured I would give my thoughts on a couple that I completed earlier in the year - from before I started the recap posts.

Name: Ghost of Tsushima Date Completed: 24/06/2024

I have heard nothing but good things about this game, and having seen some small demo videos of it, I was always intrigued by it. It took a while before I got to it, what with other titles taking precedence, but I eventually got there. And I was hooked.

The scenery in the game had me mesmerized; the story, while nothing grand, was engaging; the character development was impressive; and the combat was fluid. And there was one other thing that had me intrigued in the game. Not every side story had a happy resolution, which showed the ravages of war. Not many games, that I know of, showed you that while you dealt with the situation, it didn't cure the trauma. I also enjoyed how the game hinted at a potential attraction between Jin Sakai and Yuna, but did not go down the cheesy, overdone route of throwing it in your face.

Name: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Date Completed: 06/01/2024

This was the first game I christened the PS5 with. I had played the previous three titles back on the PS3 and when I heard this title had come out I had always wanted to play it. But, alas, I did not have the console for it. I know it was eventually ported onto PC, but I had not gotten around to getting it.

Then I got the PS5 with the monthly membership, and as I was sifting through the catalog I came across it. I did not doubt playing it first.

It is as good as its predecessors, in story and gameplay. The game improved on what came before it. One thing that I liked, was that this was the first game in the series that didn't have the unbelievable (ex. No immortality fruit, no transformative virus, etc...) This story was purely about the rise and fall of a pirate kingdom. I did wonder at first why it introduced a character (who I assumed would be a boss fight) but then barely did anything with him. This was the mercenary leader that would take over from his predecessor. But then I found his story picked up again in the stand-alone DLC: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Overall, I was happy I finally got the opportunity to play and complete the franchise. I do hope, with the way it ended, Nathan Drake's story has concluded. Maybe if the franchise continues it would be taken up either by his daughter or by Chloe Fraser. We will see what the future holds.

Name: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Date Completed: 07/01/2024

I downloaded this game because at the time I wanted something to play when I had a few minutes to spare during lunch breaks. It was a joyful, mindless beat 'em up. And It wasn't a short game. It had a decent amount of stages. It scratched that itch.

But there were other things I liked about the game. For one, using the 80s version of the characters was nostalgic for me. Another thing was that up to 6 players could join a session. At one point, I had myself and my daughter playing locally while my brother and his son joined us online from the UK.

I've returned to the game now and again, especially when I just want a little mindless fun.

That's it for June. Once I complete Ghost of Tsushima: Iki Island, which will be sooner than later, I already have Rise of the Tomb Raider installed and ready. I've been meaning to complete that trilogy. I wonder what else I might have also completed by the end of July. It will be a busy month, so chances are there won't be many.
