Beyond A Steel Sky was another game that I had sitting in limbo installed on my PC. I probably even got it around the same time as Alfred Hitchcock Vertigo (maybe even in the same bundle) and I wanted to play it because I had completed the first game (Beneath A Steel Sky).
The problem was, at the time, I either was not in the mood to play Adventure titles or I got distracted by something else. So, after finishing the prologue the game just sat there.
Well, the challenge soon fixed that.
I picked up where I left off. I didn't find it too hard because I tend to remember story elements from games even after a long absence (sometimes makes it hard for me to return to previously completed games because of this). As I played through the game, I appreciated the references to the previous title, and it was a good thing that I had played it before.
Initially, I believed it wasn't required to have played the previous game, as this one did a good job of explaining things that had happened without going overboard. But in the later segments, I definitely realized there was a benefit to having played it. This was felt more so during the confrontation with the game's antagonist (if you can call him that).
I would say he was one of the best villains I ever encountered, simply because he wasn't a villain. It's hard to explain without spoiling anything, but it is strongly recommended to play the first game to appreciate the ending of the second one.
With the way the game ended, I would assume that the series is now closed. And I would hope that they don't undermine it all by making a third game. It would almost be like how Terminator 3 retconned the ending of Terminator 2, and I would hate to see that.
Next up will be - Call of the Sea
